The Virginia Department of Transportation, the Transportation Institute of Virginia Tech University and the Federal Highway Administration are building a 9-km limited-access highway between Blacksburg and Interstate 81. This direct link will reduce traffic congestion and enhance traffic safety in this region. In addition, the project offers researchers and product developers a state-of-the-art research laboratory for testing new transportation technologies.

Brief Description of Services Provided
Design services for three proposed bridges on section 2 of the Smart Road in Montgomery County. The three bridges were designed with curved composite plate girders with concrete deck slab, stub abutment and tapered hollow piers. The bridge spans range between 115 to 335 m with maximum height of piers of 50. Projects plans and design were prepared in metric units. The substructure units are founded on steel pile footings. Subject to review, the firm will also be responsible for post-design services, i.e. construction supervision and management.
