The US 1/MD 201 Corridor Study began in the Spring of 1999. The purpose of the study is to investigate alternatives to address congestion and safety in the 10-km corridor. Project area includes US 1 and MD 201 from Sunnyside Avenue in Beltsville to MD 198 in Laurel. Stage I engineering has been completed. Stages II and III Engineering are currently underway and involve the study of the following alternatives:

  • Alternate 4 – MD 201 Widening/Extension to Virginia Manor realigned: Widen Maryland Route 201 to four lanes from Sunnyside Avenue in Greenbelt to Odell Road in Beltsville. Provide new four-lane roadway on new location from MD 201/Odell Road intersection to the intersection of Ritz Way/Virginia Manor Road. Realign and widen to four-lanes Virginia Manor Road and Van Dusen Road from Muirkirk Road to Maryland 198. Improve Sunnyside Avenue, MD 212, Muirkirk Road intersections on MD 201. Provide bicycle and pedestrian facilities and new transit service along new roadway segments.
  • Alternate 6 – “The Ladder Alternate” widen and extend US 1 to a six lane cross section from Sunnyside Avenue in Beltsville to MD 198 in Laurel. Widen MD 201 to four lanes from Sunnyside Avenue in Greenbelt to Muirkirk Road. Provide a new four-lane roadway from Muirkirk Road to Contee Road (MD 201 Extended). Improve the cross streets from MD 201 to US 1. Provide bicycle and pedestrian facilities on MD 201. Provide new transit service along new roadway segments.
