This project consisted of the widening and reconstruction of Interstate 83 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Auxiliary lanes were created by widening the existing roadway to connect the acceleration and deceleration of the adjacent interchanges of Union Deposit and Derry Street. Included was the widening and reconstruction of two mainline structures. The first structure, a bridge carrying I-83 over Pieffers Lane was reconstructed in two stages with the first stage being the auxiliary lane and shoulder along with the auxiliary lane approaches. The second stage completed the interior four lanes and the median. The second structure, a double barrel arch culvert carrying Spring Creek in one tube and Spring Creek Road in the other. These culverts were extended on both ends to accommodate the additional fill necessary to widen roadway. Also included in this project was the design of replacement wetlands, maintenance and protection of traffic, roadway design to attain a 70 mph design speed, erosion control, signing and sign structures, lighting, hydraulic analysis, utilities and stormwater management to meet local ordinances. The project was awarded an “Excellence in Transportation Design” by PennDOT.
