This project is a component of the programme for improvement, rehabilitation, and upgradation of the 13,000-km Golden Quadrilateral. When completed, the Golden Quadrilateral will provide an international high-speed road network connecting the four major metropolitan areas in India: New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai via Bangalore. The NH-5 will link Chennai to the NH-6 in West Bengal, which in turn will provide access to Calcutta and the NH-2 to New Delhi. SHELADIA has been retained as supervision consultants for the following sections in eastern Orissa:

  • Khurda – Bhubaneswar (Package OR-I)26.3 km
  • Chandikole – Bhadrak (Package OR-II)75.5 km
  • Bhadrak – Balasore (Package OR-III)63.5 km

The project is designed as a toll road and makes extensive use of the existing right-of-way. Works characteristics include:

  • Widening of existing road and/or construction of new road (sections include: 4-lane carriageways, 4-lane carriageway with rural and urban service roads, and 6-lane carriageway with service roads)
  • Construction of pavements with bituminous concrete, dense bituminous macadam, and wet mix macadam layers
  • Trial sections to prove the practicality and usefulness of polymer modified bituminous binders and geotextiles
  • Construction of 6 Flyovers
  • Construction of 38 underpasses
  • Construction of 37 minor bridges (with pile and caisson foundations)
  • Construction and extension of 187 culverts
  • Construction of Toll plazas, traffic information centers, and bus shelters.
