Pilot Project for Participatory Environmental Regeneration and Sustainable Community-Based Development in Wadi Zabid
ProjectTechnical, institutional, and socio-economical assistance to address the severe erosion of the Upland Watersheds and the abandonment and collapse of the upper terraces in two regions of Northern Region. Technical component involves development and evaluation of replicable participatory procedures and practical techniques for revegetating escarpments, reclaiming terraces, and establishing wadi’s and gully water/soil control systems. Institutional component involves strengthening of the development of and NGO, Yemen Al Kadhara. Socio-economic component involves establishing a socio-economic baseline survey to evaluate socio-economic costs and benefits derived from all project activities and from the various techniques tested.
Brief Description of Services Provided
Review of the Terms of Reference of NGO contracted for:
*Procedures to renew the capacity of communities to protect terraces and rangeland *Revegetation of escarpments and small abandoned terraces *Techniques to reclaim abandoned terrace/gully systems on a communal basis *Techniques for wadi diversion/land reclamation on a communal basis *Rangeland revegetation and fodder processing *Developments of local institutional capacity to manage, monitor, account for, and audio-visually document communal activities.
Review of proposal formulated by Ministry of Planning for NGO participation:
*Reduction of overall scale of the preparatory assistance phase *Identification of all consultants and field inputs executable by local expertise under locally managed contracts *Rephasing of community based field work *Review of equipment cost *Redrafting of the TOR of the Steering Committee.
