SHELADIA provided technical assistance to strengthen state agencies’ capabilities in planning, design and construction of small (500 ha) irrigation schemes. The emphasis was on sociological, economic, watershed, agro and social forestry, soil and water conservation, institutional development and training. The project established guidelines for irrigation site selection, irrigation performance evaluation, and standards for sizing water storage tanks and water lifting pumps and water harvesting techniques. In addition the project developed an irrigation advisory service for extension staff and farmers to promote WUAs and improved OFWM, designed an integrated micro-watershed irrigation computer model, and developed training materials for improved agricultural extension and monitored key applied research activities.
