Typhoid Control and Prevention
ProjectThis project was designed to contribute to the control and eventual eradication of typhoid in the parish of Westmoreland and other parts of the country through improvements in the water supply and sewage disposal systems, increased epidemiological surveillance and treatment of carriers of typhoid, improved environmental planning and increased health education. This strategy was adopted to ensure a longer term, sustainable solution to the recruiting typhoid problem.
SHELADIA provided a resident Water Supply/Sanitation Engineer to supervise the overall investigation, make specific recommendations on water supply and sanitation, and develop terms of reference for additional short-term expertise. Responsibilities included:
- Develop baseline data for the project area
- Assess design and function of the water treatment, solid waste and sewage disposal systems and environmental health issues in the project area
- Develop epidemiological surveillance techniques and procedures
- Assess institutional capacities, responsibilities and limitations of the involved public and private agencies in the target area
- Improve community level hygiene practices through a community health education program.
